Foundation of The Canadian Cambodian Association of Ontario
The Canadian Cambodian Association of Ontario (CCAO) was founded in 1979 by a group of Cambodian immigrants who live in Metropolitan Toronto. CCAO is a non-profit organization and it is designed to provide services to Cambodian-Canadian immigrants and newcomers.
During 1979, Canada witnessed a wave of Southeast Asian immigrants resettling across North America, due to political instability and civil warfare back in their homeland. The new wave of Cambodian immigrants who first arrived in Ontario encountered and witnessed many challenges. Among the new Cambodian Diaspora in Canada, language barriers and culture shock were the dominating contributing factors to their slow process of adaptation.
It was this realization that government and community members felt something had to be done to assist this new refugee group to resettle in Ontario. Several community leader members got together and formed the organization, "Canadian Cambodian Association of Ontario." CCAO was incorporated and registered in 1979 and received charitable status in 1980.
In order to accomplish more works for our community, we need to have our own office. However, funds provided by Ontario Government are very limited for only staffs, office supplies and issue newsletter. Thus, we are greatful for any amount of donation to help cover the cost for office rental fee.
